ADVANTAGES

Electric fans are still an important household appliance in modern families. Compared with air conditioners, which are obviously cooler than air conditioners, electric fans play a role in increasing air convection that is incomparable to air conditioners. Compared to air conditioners, electric fans are more energy-efficient and power-saving, so the power consumption is relatively small, and after opening, you can feel the natural wind, blowing is more comfortable, and energy-saving and environmentally friendly.

Motor Construction
Brushed DC motors rely on a mechanical system to transmit current, whereas AC and BLDC motors use an electronic mechanism to control the current. Brushed motors have a wound armature attached to the centre and a permanent magnet bonded to a steel ring around the rotor. When the brushes are in contact with the commutator, current passes through the armature coil.

AC induction motors and brushless DC motors do not rely on a mechanical system (brushes) to control the current. AC and brushless DC motors transmit current through the stator (solenoid), which is connected to the AC supply either directly or via a solid state circuit.

In an AC induction motor, the rotor rotates according to the “induction” of the rotating magnetic field within the stator when current is passed. In a brushless DC motor, permanent magnets are bonded directly to the rotor, rather than inducing it, and as current passes through the stator, the magnetic poles on the rotor rotate in relation to the electromagnetic poles generated within the stator, resulting in motion.

Efficiency: BLDC vs. AC
The efficiency of a system is defined as the percentage of output received in relation to the input to the system. So when we talk about the energy efficiency of brushless DC (BLDC) motors, we are saying that we can get a relatively high level of mechanical power in exchange for the electricity we use.

All three technologies have power losses in the form of I-R losses. DC motors utilise permanent magnets, so none of their energy needs to be used to create electromagnets in the same way as AC motors. The energy used to create the electromagnets in an AC motor reduces the efficiency of the AC motor compared to a DC motor.

At the same time, brushless DC motors are considered to be more energy efficient than brushed DC motors. This means that for the same input power, a brushless DC motor can convert more electrical power into mechanical power than a brushed DC motor, mainly due to the absence of friction from the brushes. The efficiency gains are greatest in the no-load and low load regions of the motor performance curve.

For the same mechanical work output, brushless DC motors are usually smaller than brushed DC motors and always smaller than AC induction motors. A brushless DC motor is smaller because it has less heat to dissipate in its body. From this point of view, brushless DC motors use less raw material and are better for the environment.

Service and Maintenance: DC vs. Brushless DC
Brushed motors are not only larger than brushless motors, but they also have a shorter service life. Brushed motors have brushes that are usually made of carbon or graphite compounds and will wear out during use. Over time, these brushes will require maintenance and replacement, so the motor will need to be serviced to ensure continued service. As the brushes wear, no dust will be generated but noise will be generated due to friction with the commutator. Brushless motors last longer and are cleaner and quieter as they have no parts that rub or wear during use.

Speed Stability
The Hall effect sensor built into the brushless DC motor detects the change in polarity from the N to the S pole as the rotor rotates. Depending on the time between state changes, the speed of the rotor is determined. This information is then fed back to the drive circuit to adjust the speed of the switching sequence.

The steam-powered fans originated in 1830, when an American named James Byron was inspired by the structure of clocks and invented a mechanical fan that could be fixed to the ceiling and driven by clockwork. But this mechanical fan was able to save people from the hot summer, but it required people to climb up a ladder to wind it up every time it was used, which was inconvenient to operate.

In 1872, a Frenchman named Joseph developed another kind of mechanical fan driven by a clockwork turbine and a gear and chain mechanism. This fan is a little more sophisticated than the fan invented by Byron.

In 1880, the American engineer Schuyler Skaats Wheeler for the first time installed the blades directly on the motor, and then powered by the power supply, so that the blades can blow the wind to let us feel the summer cool, and the world’s first electric fan was thus born.

In 1882, the American engineer Schuyler Skaats Wheeler, invented the first commercial electric fan, and in the following year, the factory began mass production of the electric fan, which was then a desktop fan with only two blades.

In 1908, GE General Electric, developed the world’s first gear-driven, left- and right-swinging electric fan. This fan became the mainstream of electric fan sales because it prevented the unnecessary 360-degree head-turning air supply.

In 1916, the first electric fan was born in China. The inventor was Yang Jichuan. He built a transformer factory at Hengbang Bridge Sichuan North Road Shanghai, and named it “Huasheng Electric Appliance Manufacturing Factory”.

Later, with the progress of society and the development of science and technology, the variety of electric fans gradually increased, including table fans, floor fans, ceiling fans, wall fans, and solar rechargeable fan, to meet the needs of different occasions. Its material has also gradually changed from metal to plastic, and its functionality has been continuously enhanced.

The electric fan is mainly composed of fan head, fan blade, fan net and control device and other components. The fan head includes the motor, front and rear end caps and the shaking head air supply mechanism, etc.The main component of the electric fan is: fan motor.

I. Structure
Rotor: composed of magnet, fan blade and shaft.
Stator: composed of silicon steel sheet, shaft and bearing.
Control circuit: by IC induction magnets.
The N.S. pole is controlled by the circuit to conduct its coil to produce internal excitation to rotate the rotor.

II. Working Principle:

The energized coil is rotated by the force in the magnetic field. Electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy, and because of the coil resistance, it is inevitable that some of the electrical energy will be converted into heat energy.

When an electric fan works (assuming there is no heat transfer between the room and the outside world), the temperature in the room does not decrease, but increases. To analyze the reason for the increase in temperature: when the electric fan is working, there is a current through the coil of the electric fan, and the wire is resistive, so it will inevitably generate heat to the outside, and the temperature will naturally increase. But why do people feel cooler? Because there is a lot of sweat on the human body surface, and when the fan is working, the air in the room will flow, so it can promote the rapid evaporation of sweat, combined with “evaporation needs to absorb a lot of heat”, so people will feel cool.

I. DC fan operation principles

According to Ampere’s right-hand rule, a magnetic field is generated around a conductor when it passes through an electric current. If the conductor is placed in another fixed magnetic field, a suction or repulsion force is generated, causing the object to move. In the rotor (fan blade) of a DC fan, a rubber permanent magnet ring is attached (the rubber ring is filled with the number of poles corresponding to the number of poles of the silicon steel sheet, i.e., N, S, N, S ~). The rotor (fan blade) is positioned at the center of the shaft and wrapped around the silicon steel sheet, which is wound with two sets of coils. When the repulsive force is greater than the static friction of the fan, the rotor (fan blades) rotates naturally. The direction of rotation is determined by Fleming’s right-hand rule.

Energy conversion of the fan: electrical energy → electromagnetic energy → mechanical energy (kinetic energy) → thermal energy

II. What is a BLDC fan

1). Conventional DC motors must have brushes and commutators (rectifiers) to provide different directions of current switching to generate thrust to keep the motor running.
2). At present, our fans are manufactured with DC voltage, and a fixed electronic switching switch (e.g. Hall sensor IC) is used instead of brushes to switch the current to drive the rotor to run continuously, so they are called “DC brushless fans”.
3). Advantages of BLDC fan:
3-1). There is no wear and tear of carbon brushes, so it can run continuously for a long time without maintenance.
3-2). Easy to run at high speed, high efficiency and low noise.
3-3). No sparking when switching current.
