Electricity is a fundamental catalyst for economic development, and many African countries are actively working towards enhancing their energy infrastructure to stimulate growth. We all need reliable and affordable electricity in our homes to live comfortably and productively. Whether it’s lighting up your home at night, keeping fans or air conditioners on when it’s hot, or even more important things like charging your phone, laptop, and plugging in your fridge, African homes rely on electricity.

Unfortunately, not only is electricity supply unreliable in most African countries, electricity prices can also be high. Still, some countries pay less than others.

There are still many countries around the world that suffer from power shortages or have irregular power supplies and frequent power cuts. The main reasons for this are inadequate power plants, weak power transmission facilities and inadequate and ageing power distribution transformers. Countries with electricity shortages are mainly in developing countries and less developed regions, especially in Africa and Asia. Apart from Egypt and South Africa, other countries and regions in Africa, including even some African cities, are still lacking electricity. As for the rural areas of Africa and some tribes, the lack of electricity is even more serious, and even if there is electricity, it is still extremely tight. In Tanzania, for example, the situation is very serious: out of a population of 50 million, two thirds live in rural and remote areas, and it is said that only one in ten households has access to electricity. As for countries such as Chad, Congo and South Sudan, electricity has become a luxury for the people of these countries, and the lack of electricity is so severe that it goes without saying that power cuts are a problem. In the remote provinces of Chad, only the local chief’s office can guarantee a regular supply of electricity. South Sudan has only 4.5% of the population using electricity, while others like Burundi, Chad and Liberia have less than 10% of their population using electricity.

We will focus on the top 10 African countries where households pay the lowest electricity prices.
